Why UK lawyers are stepping away from traditional law firms

2 Min Read

The Punter Southall Law talent acquisition department speaks with lawyers at all levels every day. Some of these lawyers have been consultants for a while and some are still working at traditional law firms. What they tend to have in common are their reasons for having a conversation with our team.

These are the reasons many lawyers decide to become consultants that we consistently hear.

Climbing the corporate ladder

Many lawyers find the hierarchical structure of traditional law firms stifling. The rigid path to partnership can be slow and competitive, often leading to frustration and dissatisfaction.

By becoming consultant lawyers, they can bypass this corporate ladder, taking control of their careers and progressing at their own pace without the constraints of traditional promotion pathways.

The lack of flexibility and poor work-life balance

The 2020 pandemic has reshaped the way many lawyers view work environments, making flexible workplace arrangements not only possible but desirable. Traditional law firms often demand long hours and fixed schedules, leading to burnout and a poor work-life balance.

In contrast, consulting offers the flexibility to manage one’s own schedule, work remotely and achieve a healthier balance between professional and personal life.

Time recording and targets

Traditional law firms often place heavy emphasis on billable hours and stringent targets, which can create a high-pressure environment. This focus on time recording can detract from the quality of legal work and client relationships.

Consultant lawyers, on the other hand, have more control over their workloads and billing practices, allowing them to focus on delivering value rather than merely clocking hours.

Financial incentives and autonomy

Consultant lawyers enjoy greater financial incentives by retaining a larger share of their billable revenue. Without the overhead costs and complex compensation structures of traditional firms, they can potentially earn more.

Additionally, the autonomy to set their own rates and choose their clients empowers them to maximise their earning potential and achieve financial independence.

Administrative burdens and office politics

Traditional law firms often involve significant administrative tasks and internal politics, which can distract from practising law.

Consultant lawyers can avoid much of this bureaucracy, allowing them to focus more on their clients and legal work. Free from office politics and hierarchical constraints, they can enjoy a more straightforward and merit-based professional environment.
